The Honourable Minister of Defence Ambassador Sheikh Omar Faye attended the 44th Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council at the Ministerial level. The meeting was held on the 4th September 2020 in Niamey. The purpose of the meeting was to review the political and security situation in the region, with particular emphasis on the political processes in Mali, The Gambia and Guinea Bissau.
The meeting also considered the status of the forthcoming presidential elections in the region, in Burkina Faso. Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Conakry and Niger, as well as the parliamentary and local elections held in Benin and Mali.
The meeting equally reviewed the Regional Plan of Action against Terrorism.
he Ministers also received briefs on the status of the implementation of the National Early Warning and Response Mechanisms (NEWRMs) and the status of the Humanitarian Situation in the region.
The platform offered a unique opportunity for the Honourable Minister to interact with his colleagues in the Region and shared valuable information and lessons. He used the forum to thank his colleagues for their support to our transition especially the ongoing Security Sector Reform.
